I was cleaning out my storage room yesterday going

I was cleaning out my storage room yesterday going through all of the bins of camping gear, holiday decorations, and party supplies.

Years ago when I decluttered with the KonMari method, it made me realize that a good life doesn’t require a lot of stuff. It’s really about the experiences, the memories, and the feelings.

Which is why we love tools that help us add the f-u-n to our funschooling weeks- our little mini breaks where i don’t want to lose our rhythm and momentum but we need a break from lessons.

When we opened up our box gifted from @thelandofstorybooks my kids squealed like it was Christmas! Each box comes with a fresh copy of a sweet family read aloud, a letter from the book’s main characters. an in-depth guide to bringing the book to life through conversation topics and hands-on activities, and all the supplies you’ll need to make a fun craft project.

We spent hours on our book balcony reading this sweet book. We read it a few years ago but neither of my older kids remembered it. The kids were able to assemble and complete the boxcar craft all on their own and these little cars have been endless fun all week. We went for a walk in the woods yesterday and imagined what it would be like to spend the night, where we’d find shelter, how we’d find food.

We love the story of Sophie’s Squash, an unexpected story of friendship and the circle of life. We made some squash pancakes to celebrate this favorite fall book for #thefictionfeast! Add a cup of squash and a dash of pumpkin pie spice to your favorite pancake recipe or try ours below. We’ve made these vegan, gluten free, dairy free…they are super flexible!

- 1 cup butternut squash puree
- 4 tablespoons butter or oil
- 4 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1.5 cups milk, any kind
- 2 eggs or flax eggs
- 2 cups flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice

Some farmer’s market fun! 🌽 🍅 🌶 🍆🍐🍋🥔🥕

Do you ever need a light week? When I feel like we need a little break but not a total break from routine, we turn to funschooling! We’re still learning, but we bring in some fun resources that we otherwise don’t have time to fit in with our main lessons. We’re using the Farm Guide from @thepeacefulpress this week and my kids are loving it!

My 9yo made a shopping list for our supplies (totally counting that as spelling practice!) and then they decided to sort and classify the foods into groups. We made signage and decorated (an impromptu marketing lesson!). We got out some coins and dollars and discussed pricing and then gathered some baskets and bags for easy shopping. We had tons of math practice and imaginative play with this setup this morning- the best kind of school for little ones!

And today’s lesson becomes tomorrow’s vegetable soup. 😉 #pretendplay #funschooling

A little pumpkin project for all ages! 🎃

In our home, everyone gets to participate with all of our projects. Of course, a 3yo’s skills and abilities look much different than a 9yo’s, but I am a big believer in embracing what your child CAN do and celebrating whatever those little hands create.

In another time, I may have sat down and “helped” my kids do this pumpkin embroidery project the “right” way. We would have had three remarkably similar projects that would have demonstrated *my* ability to micromanage quite nicely. 🙈

Now, I present projects like this. I gathered the materials and prepare them ahead of time. I picked out some fall colored felt and pre-threaded needles with some coordinating colors. We used size 2 crewel needles for this and they are a fantastic size for little hands and still sharp enough to get through the felt easily. When it was time for the project, I told the kids we were going to embroidery pumpkins. I let each child choose what size hoop to work with and design their own felt shapes. Each child chose their own thread and decided on their own stitches to make.

My 9yo knows a handful of stitches already, and my 6yo asked for help in figuring out how to make a line for the stem so I showed him a stem stitch on a practice piece of felt and then he was able to do it on his project. My 3yo had a more abstract interpretation with her embroidery 🤪but what’s really remarkable is that by the end of the project she had mastered the up and down motion of the needle without getting tangled up going around the hoop. Pretty impressive if you ask me!

Handicrafts with young children has much less to do with how much skill *you* have as the teacher and much more to do with how much time you are willing to invest and how much patience you can muster through the process. It’s a worthy investment, don’t you agree? 🧵

Nature study in our house is so much fun!

We enjoy nature out on our property and while exploring local parks and nature preserves as often as we can and we learn so much just be observing and *being* in nature. When we’re at home, nature study makes its way into our lessons three days a week.

One lesson is for nature lore, living books that tell engaging stories about nature. We don’t use textbooks or apps to learn facts, we’re learning about nature just as if we were out adventuring ourselves, little by little, learning as the seasons change and as we travel from place to place through stories.

The other two lessons are dedicated to one of our special study topics for the term. We chose 2-3 special study topics like spiders, trees, mushrooms, or ducks and dig into those through real life exploration, living books, documentaries, science experiments, handicrafts, and art.

Today we’re learning all about chrysanthemums with @chickieandroo’s flower of the month club. I bought out the mum section at Trader Joe’s so we could examine a variety of types of mums. We enjoyed poetry, art, and one of our favorite picture books! We also hand carved chrysanthemum stamps to make some cards to send off to family and friends.

Nature study doesn’t have to be boiled down to boring facts. Nature study is at its core the art of seeing and observing. Its value also comes from its relationship to us as humans. Nature brings us together to delight in its beauty and inspires us to live life to the fullest.

Six months later, this quarantine project is in the books!!! When we toured this house for the first time, I was a little taken aback that the only guest bathroom was through the laundry room in a dark scary corner of the house. 👻 We peeled back the layers of year 2002 deep red and 1993 golden yellow 😆 and put our own flair into this little room and I have to say, I’d be happy to have guests pee in here anytime now! 😉

We painted the cabinets with @generalfinishes Persian blue milk paint, this is the third house we’ve used GF for in and highly recommend! The vanity light is from @overstock, the mirror is from @worldmarket, butcher block countertop from @ikeausa, vase from @target, awesome Groovy Garden Navy wallpaper, sink, fixture, and hardware from Amazon, and my absolute favorite touch, the gold hummingbird mobile by @jeremiahbrent for @potterybarnkids.

I don’t expect any of my children to be great artists, to be master craftspeople, the be the inventor of the next great thing.

Though I might be a little competitive in a game like Scrabble 🤪, life isn’t a competition and I sure hope I never project my dreams or my desires onto my kids.

Our life is filled with goodness, adventures, and the beauty of everyday things. We use our hands, read books full of amazing ideas, and experience the world around us first hand. We don’t do these things with any end goal in mind. The process of experiencing the learning and doing the things is the goal in itself.

For any reformed perfectionists 🙈, I hope that you can take heart in this certainty of life. We can never know all the things, we can’t do all the things, we can be the best at all the things. What we CAN do is allow our hearts to open to the joy of trying new things, learning new skills, discovering new ideas, and finding new adventures.

What’s the last thing you’ve tried and “failed” at but still found joy in? For me, it is learning music- I’ve been playing piano and recorder and though it sounds like an animal meeting its demise 😆, I am loving it. Whether it’s painting or learning a new language or sculpting with clay, I hope we can all embrace the act of doing without thinking about the end game. Do something just for fun, I dare you!
