I guess you could say I’ve been living under a rock because I’m super late to the Whole30 craze, but better late than never, right? I never really considered Whole30 or paid attention to what it was because I’m already a real foodie. We’ve been a real food family for almost five years now. Eating organic, local, clean food and cooking from scratch for my family is nothing new. So why do I want to do Whole30?
I’ve heard a lot about Whole30 and have several friends who have done it, but it took having a close friend experience the Whole30 journey to make me take a second look. My friend Lisa is on her second round of Whole30 and the changes she has experienced have inspired me and given me hope. She looks great, feels great, has more energy and has an amazing glow now. I want that glow!
Besides the amazing glow, I’d love to lose some weight too. I have 25 pounds of “baby weight” that won’t budge even though my little one is almost two. I lost almost 90 pounds in the year after I had my first baby, so holding onto this weight is not something I expected.
Last year, I tried out the Food Babe Way for 21 days and while I lost a few pounds and learned some great new habits, I mostly reverted back to my old ways. I also tried to focus on exercise last year with running and Pilates and while I go to the gym 3-5 times a week now, I still haven’t lost any weight.
I know that my inability to lose weight is due to some poor eating habits. I often skip meals, which then causes me to overeat later in the day. I’ve also developed a terrible sugar addiction.
When we first made the switch to real food, I didn’t buy or cook with sugar at all for more than two years. But it slowly but surely crept back in to my kitchen and I now have no problem whipping up a batch of organic, gluten-free brownies with local, pastured eggs any day of the week. Sugar is sugar, and I need to quit it!
I borrowed the book The Whole30: The 30-Day Guide to Total Health and Food Freedom and read most of it in one night. I’ve read a lot of food books, and I loved this one. It also includes a section of simple recipes that would actually work for my family. I did some meal planning and wrote out my shopping list with a plan to practice Whole30 for a few days before I committed. I knew I wanted to splurge on carrot cake on Easter Sunday so I planned to start sometime after that.
My dress rehearsal went well and I officially started Whole30 on March 30. What will the next 30 days bring? I’m not sure, but I’m excited to find out! I’m going to track all of my meals and plan to share photos and recipes weekly. I’m a pretty boring eater, but I know it helps me to see what a real person eats so I’m happy to share.
