Don’t throw me in jail. I finally have a privacy policy and disclosure policy for my blog.
I started blogging because I wanted to share my crunchy ways and updates about life with family and friends, but over time the blogging world has evolved. Times are changing and so is this little space on the internet.
I now blog less about our family and more about life as a mother, homeschool, DIY projects, and home decor. Part of this shift has been to maintain a bit more privacy for my family as my children get older, and part of this is because that’s where the money is.
As much as I love writing and sharing ideas about living simply and joyfully with others, it’s nice to pay some bills, too. I’m a rule-follower by nature, but when it comes to making money blogging, the rules can seem a little murky.
There’s been a lot of buzz in the blogging world about disclosures as more and more people seem to be blogging for the big not-so-big bucks.
I’ve read some horror stories about bloggers getting into big trouble with ad networks and affiliate networks. Like this blogger who got booted from the Amazon affiliate program.
I don’t want that to be me.
Who Needs A Disclosure Policy Anyway?
If you have a blog, you need one. I found some informative reading about the FTC Guidelines here, here, here, and here. And here is some great info about disclosing properly on social media.
You’ll also want to thoroughly read the terms and conditions of any ad and affiliate networks to ensure compliance.
Besides the fact that it’s the law, there’s an even bigger reason why every blog needs a disclosure policy. It’s the right thing to do.
Having a successful blog means having readers. Do wrong to those readers, and your blog is nothing.
Being open, honest, and up front when there is any kind of connection between you and a brand, product, or service, is completely necessary to maintain and build trust with readers.
In the spirit of being open and honest and to comply with the FTC guidelines, I offer you my disclosure policy.
