There is nothing quite like the excitement of watching a baby take her first steps. I’ve gotten to experience it three times now, and it’s a thrill every single time.

I can’t even believe it, but my baby is finally walking! She is 18 months old, what most would consider a “late” walker. She was steadily progressing with her gross motor skills, just a little later than most babies.
Nearly seven years of parenting has given me the gift of experience and perspective. I knew she would walk. Eventually. In her own time.
And she certainly has taken off! We’re still in the stumbly, baby zombie phase, but she’s getting stronger and more confident every day. I just love seeing her walking around discovering the world from a new vantage point.
Now that she is walking, we get to think about putting shoes on her cute little feet!
Good for the Earth, Good for People
When I choose clothing for our family, I try to make conscious choices about how we spend our money. Our dollars add to the climate of waste and inequality in the world or they can help heal the Earth and lift people up.
My kids each have a capsule wardrobe, and I’m proud to say that almost all of their clothing is re-used or purchased secondhand.
But shoes? My kids are tough on their shoes! And it can be challenging to find shoes in excellent condition on secondhand shops (and I know some people are weird about that anyway!).
The Humble Soles
I was so excited to learn about The Humble Soles, a small mom-owned shop that sources ethically handcrafted shoes and accessories made by Nicaraguan artisans. Communities are surely lifted up with this valuable work to do.
And beyond that, The Humble Soles donates 10 percent to the children of Nicaragua.
What I love about this the most is that you, the buyer, get to decide where you would like to give. You can choose one of three options; feed a child, fund a child’s education, or fix a child’s home.
Whether your heart leans towards one way or the other, just know your purchase is going beyond a store front. Your heart is reaching those in Nicaragua.
Beautiful shoes with a purpose
I’m a giver and a lover and my heart is sold on helping these sweet children. As a bonus, you get some beautiful shoes! These shoes are genuine leather, stylish, and comfortable. They’re made for growing babies in mind, too.
When I first browsed the shop, I loved that there are no “boy” and “girl” styles. There are some that are more feminine, but they have several gender neutral options, which is fantastic.
We got the Natalia sandal in brown for my girls and the Luna sandal in brown for my boy. These are the perfect summer sandals!
The Humble Soles sends out orders in sweet stamped muslin bags. I noticed the quality of the leather and the craftsmanship right away.
My kids are slightly shoe obsessed, and they put these on in less than five minutes (not kidding!).
The neutral brown is the perfect color. It’s not so light that it gets dirty easily, but a nice medium brown color. The leather is buttery soft, and I love the adjustable straps to give kids’ growing feet some extra room to move up or down as needed.
These neutral sandals would go perfectly with any of my girls’ outfits or anything from my son’s capsule wardrobe. They are causal enough to wear with denim shorts but dressy enough to wear with a fancier outfit as well.
We are thrilled with our new sandals and so excited that they came just in time for baby sister to start walking, with a little help from her big sister and brother of course!
In addition to handmade children’s shoes, The Humble Soles also offers women’s shoes, macrame baby items, dresses, sun hats, and bows. All ethically made in Nicaragua.
