Let it be known that my cinnamon rolls come from a can (thanks @annieshomegrown!). I also regularly fall asleep in my clothes or wear pajamas all day- there doesn’t seem to be a happy medium. 🤪 My sink is usually full of dishes and if you watch my stories you know that my vacuum cleaner is like an old piece of furniture that can regularly be found in my hallway. 😆
Just wanted to clear the air and dispel any myths about “doing it all.” Something has to fall to the bottom of the list and I’d much rather it be laundry and mopping the floor than spending quality time with my children. I’m all about shortcuts in this season in life...whose with me?! 🙋‍♀️#honestmotherhood #keepingitreal #motherhoodunfiltered

If I could send her into adulthood with just one thing, it would be to always know she is deeply and unconditionally loved. ❤️ In a world where we’re constantly bombarded with messages that we have to do more, be more, and buy more, good parenting sometimes means tossing out what everyone else is saying to focus on what my gut says and what I’ve known all along.
A life filled with simplicity and connection is the best way to my children’s hearts. I think it may be the very best gift we could ever possibly give our children.

I just love watching my kids and their imaginations in action. Open ended toys are the vehicle to endless imaginative play and this clear tube has been a favorite toy for years. It has been so many things! Here, it is a roller coaster that launches cars into the nativity scene. 🤷‍♀️🤔😂 Wooden blocks, magnetiles, Legos, playsilks, and wooden peg people have been some our our most used open ended toys- I know that any time I bring these out they will be played with in old and new ways!

“Mama! You know how you can mix certain colors to make new colors? You can mix letters to make different sounds and words!” School should be this exciting every day! Next time I try to steal the joy out of learning I’m going to remind myself of this moment right here. Where letters make sounds and sounds become words. Because words are powerful and maybe someday, her words will change the world. 🌎

What do you remember about kindergarten? I remember being SO EXCITED to join Mrs. Johnson’s class just like my brother who is a year older than me. I went in the afternoons which meant we would have a little bit of time in the classroom, recess, and snack time on the patio. I remember sitting in lines organized by colors and learning to walk single file as a group. I remember singing songs, the teacher reading us stories, and lots of painting. I remember the joy of making friends and getting to play with blocks and puzzles and dolls.

I don’t remember learning to read or math drills. There was no letter of the week and there were no unit studies. We didn’t sit inside a classroom being taught for hours on end. There weren’t quizzes or tests and the only grades given were that I was progressing satisfactory. Eventually, I’d go on to graduate from high school and a tier 1 university with a 4.0 GPA and a love of learning instilled in my heart. Personal experience (and research too!) shows that any advantage your preschooler has by focusing on early academics fades away in early elementary. So why are we still pushing for more, more, more??? Friedrich Frobel, the inspiration behind the term “kindergarten” tells us: “The mind grows by self revelation. In play the child ascertains what he can do, discovers his possibilities of will and thought by exerting his power spontaneously. In work he follows a task prescribed for him by another, and doesn't reveal his own proclivities and inclinations; but another's. In play he reveals his own original power.” I have poured over the history of kindergarten and preschools, and have found that the essence of these early years has been twisted and manipulated and now looks a far cry from what it used to.

Let’s give the power back to these little humans. It’s in there. It’s not our job to force it out of them; it’s our job to create opportunities for our little ones to make discoveries on their own and reveal the power within their head, heart, and hands. So sit back, mama. Let the children play and the rest will fall into place.

So much to be thankful for. ☺️ Call me a serial optimist but I always look for the sunshine peeking out behind the clouds. Having an attitude of gratitude not just in November but all year long is such a valuable lesson for the whole family.
We borrowed this sweet thankful pumpkin idea from @tshoxenreider for November, but I’d love to continue something for the year. Any ideas???

I’ve spent my whole life searching for H-O-M-E. Maybe this is why we’ve moved four times in five years...my endless search for the perfect house. But what I know now is that home isn’t a place. It’s not the walls, it’s what’s inside those walls. It doesn’t need an open concept, it doesn’t come with bedrooms for all the kids, it doesn’t require extra storage. It’s easy to confuse home with house, but I can tell you from experience that being *house*-less is not the same thing as being *home*-less.
I moved around constantly growing up. But when I was little, somehow my mom always made us feel like we were HOME whether we were living in an apartment, somebody’s spare room, or traveling across the country in our car. Home is the feeling of being safe, deeply loved, appreciated for who you are and not what you bring to the table, and wholly accepted, quirks and all. It’s cliche but so true: home is where the heart is.

We enjoyed a sweet Thanksgiving yesterday with old friends, new friends, strangers, and family, and it was truly just what our hearts needed. I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving spent with the ones you love. And now, let the Christmas decorating begin! 🎄
