Buying a bedroom set is a rite of passage. A matching headboard, dresser and nightstand are a big deal. It’s a sign of real adulting. A sign you have arrived.
We bought our first bedroom set two years into our marriage. It was a beautiful, dark wood veneer set that barely fit into our two-bedroom apartment. It cost more than we’d ever spent on furniture before, and it felt so luxurious to have it!
Creating Your Own Style
I’ve since learned the beauty of curating a more personalized collection of furniture. In our last two houses, we’ve skipped the bedroom sets all together.
I like to piece together different looks by combining pieces we already have, thrift store finds, and some new pieces with DIY elbow grease to create a cohesive style.
Investing in cornerstone pieces that will stand the test of time is absolutely a wise investment. With more trendy pieces, I think DIY or refurbished furniture is the way to go.
I saw these gorgeous apocathary cabinet nightstands on Pinterest and knew I had to recreate them. Well, I knew my husband had to recreate them because he’s the handy one around here.
This IKEA Hack Farmhouse Nightstand is beautiful, functional, and I won’t feel bad if my style has moved away from these in a few years because they weren’t super expensive.
IKEA For The Win
Did you know there are people who don’t love IKEA? Shocking I know! My sister-in-law is one of those people, but I’m on a mission to convince her that next to Disney World, IKEA is the happiest place on Earth. We don’t even have an IKEA near me, but it is completely worth the 4-hour round trip craziness to get there.
The store is huge and the shopping process is different so it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But they have so many little hidden gems that make fantastic additions to your home. Like these RAST dressers.
I couldn’t find these on the IKEA website right now, so I called IKEA to check on them and they are off the shelves in the US at the moment, and they aren’t sure when they will be back in. But don’t worry, IKEA has some other great unfinished options too.

Our IKEA Hack Farmhouse Nightstand
We followed the instructions from Thrifty and Chic to router the drawer faces, and it worked great. I found drawer pulls with a similar look for a great price on Amazon.
We opted to finish the dresser in our signature style found on most of the DIY furniture in our house. The white paint is Aesthetic White (the same white we used on our DIY Shiplap Wall) the stain is a custom process of whitewashing heavily diluted chalk paint followed by a super quick stain using Minwax Jacobean stain.

hello.
i love the ottoman type piece you have at the foot of the bed. Where did you get it? It is just what I have been looking for.
Thank you
Alexis
I found it at Ross a few years ago. I’ve seen similar there and at HomeGoods!
